Description

Caring for individuals with substance use disorders can occur in any setting. This one-hour program will provide your staff with current education regarding substance use disorders, including pathophysiology, interdisciplinary management, and local resources.

Audience

Nurses, EMS, and other healthcare providers who care for individuals who experience substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives

Identify common and emerging substance use disorders in North Iowa including their definitions and diagnostic criteria according to the DSM-5, as well as the neurobiological basis of addiction.​

Apply evidence-based interventions for managing substance use disorders in the inpatient and outpatient setting.​

Define the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the management of substance use disorders, including working with physicians and community resources to provide holistic care to patients.​

Prepare nurses to educate patients and their families about substance use disorders, including providing information on the effects of different substances and the risks associated with substance use.​

Describe the importance of maintaining professional boundaries when caring for patients with substance use disorders.

List available community resources and referral options for patients with substance use disorders, including rehabilitation programs, support groups, and mental health services.


Continuing Education Credit

1 Contact Hour for Nurses. NIACC is Iowa Board of Nursing Provider #3 of continuing education programs.

1 Formal CEH for EMS Personnel. NIACC is a State Department of Health Emergency Medical Services approved sponsor #2 of continuing education programs for EMS Personnel.

Other healthcare providers will receive CE certificates reflecting one (1) hour of education.

*Participants must be present for the entire program to receive Continuing Education credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.

Meet Your Presenter!

Alexandra Seibert graduated with honors from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Biology. She pursued her Nursing education at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) before earning her BSN and Master of Science – Nursing Leadership and Management at Western Governors University. She is currently an instructor at NIACC in the field of Mental Health Nursing. Alexandra is an experienced nursing educator, dedicated to delivering high-quality continuing education programs that enhance clinical knowledge and skills. She is committed to presenting engaging workshops and seminars that emphasize assessment, intervention strategies, and emerging trends in psychiatric care. She fosters an interactive learning environment that encourages critical thinking and the application of evidence-based practices, thus preparing nursing professionals to provide compassionate, informed care to patients with mental health needs.

Dr. Bill Hampton
DO, FACOEP

Dr. Hampton is a full-time emergency physician and has been board-certified in emergency medicine since 2007.  He is also Clinical Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine for the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University.  In addition to his busy lecture schedule, he completes around 600 hours of continuing medical education (CME) annually himself. 

Dr. Hampton lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of emergency medicine topics for diverse audiences including the Emergency Nurses’ Association Annual & Leadership Conferences, the Canadian National Emergency Nurse's Association Annual Conference, the Society for Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant’s Annual Conference, American College of Emergency Physician’s Scientific Assembly, the University of Calgary Urgent Care Conference, the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physician’s Spring Seminar, and the Society of Trauma Nurses Annual Trauma Conference.  He has lectured in Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.   Dr. Hampton's lectures have also been featured online for the Society of Trauma Nurses, Contemporary Forums, ACOEP’s Digital Classroom, and QuantiaMD, an online physician education site.

Dr. Jonathan Thompson
State of Iowa Deputy State Medical Examiner

Dr. Thompson began his duties as Deputy State Medical Examiner in November 2016. He first arrived in 2008 and served as Associate State Medical Examiner at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner until his appointment as Deputy State Medical Examiner in 2016. He is an Associate Professor of Pathology with the University of Iowa and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Forensic Pathology with Des Moines University.

He received a B.S. degree from the University of Iowa in Exercise Science and his M.D. from the University of Iowa School of Medicine. His four-year residency training took place at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and his fellowship in forensic pathology was done at the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office. Dr. Thompson is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Forensic Pathology, and Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

Prior to Iowa, he was Assistant Medical Examiner with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Dr. Joshua Trebach

Dr. Trebach is a medical toxicologist and emergency physician at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and is the Associate Medical Director at the Iowa Poison Control Center (IPCC). Dr. Trebach received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Trebach completed his medical toxicology fellowship training at New York University/New York City Poison Control Center. Dr. Trebach is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology. Dr. Trebach's interests include medical education, public health, clinical research, disaster preparedness,  plants, mushrooms, and all things toxicology!

Dr. Mannenbach has been an educator in pediatric emergency medicine for his entire career. He has completed training and practiced pediatric emergency medicine in academic referral hospitals in the upper Midwest. During his 30+ year career, he has provided educational experiences for pre-hospital care providers, medical students, residents, nursing staff, and referring providers locally, regionally, and nationally. His special interests include pediatric readiness, pediatric patient safety, recognition of child physical and sexual abuse, and pediatric resuscitation. He has utilized multiple educational formats with a special interest in in situ simulation as a tool for improving patient care. He and his wife have 4 grown children, 3 “adopted in-laws” with a fourth hopefully coming soon, and six grandchildren.

Dr. Jorgensen received her undergraduate degree at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA and completed both medical school and psychiatry residency at the University of Iowa, where she served as chief resident. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She has served as Chief Medical Officer at Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare since July 2021. She is the psychiatrist for the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team and initiated the clinic's First Episode Psychosis team. Dr. Jorgensen is also Director of the Public and Rural Psychiatry Residency track at the University of Iowa. She is passionate about improving care and access for patients in rural Iowa.

Dr. Angeles Morcuende
M.D.

Dr. Morcuende is a psychiatrist who works as a psychotherapist at Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare in Mason City, Iowa. Her practice focuses on the intergenerational transmission of trauma by helping parents with unresolved childhood trauma establish a secure relationship with their children. In addition, Dr. Morcuende is currently providing agency-wide trauma and attachment training at Prairie Ridge. For fifteen years, Dr. Morcuende provided didactic training and psychotherapy supervision to psychiatrists in training at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in her role as Clinical Associate Professor. Dr. Morcuende lives between Mason City and Iowa City and loves her community in Northern Iowa.
